LAHORE, March 8: Punjab University students will inform President Gen Pervez Musharraf about problems they are facing on his visit to the campus on March 13.

In a statement on Wednesday, they said the varsity administration had increased fee of various disciplines which was not affordable to them. They said that the self-support scheme should be abolished as it was only introduced to generate revenue.

The varsity should also remove hurdles in the release of funds for research projects besides ensuring that funds allocated by the Higher Education Commission for different projects should not lapse.

Two new hostels should be built to accommodate girl students who, otherwise, were forced to stay there like goats due to shortage of space, they said.

They said at least a fleet of 10 new buses should be included to address transport problems and inter-net facility be provided with boarders. An over-head bridge should also be built immediately near the Islamic Centre as students, especially girls, were exposed to accidents.

Meanwhile, the Islami Jamiat Tulba urged the varsity administration to pressure the government to take action against policemen involved in the killing of its employee. Rizwan, a mess attendant, was killed during a rally taken out on the campus bridge a couple of weeks ago to condemn blasphemous cartoons.
