KARACHI, March 8: Speakers at a seminar stressed the need of promoting awareness among police ranks regarding the rights and protection of children in detention. The seminar on the “Role of police under the Juvenile Justice System Ordinance 2000”, was organized by the Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child. The moot was attended among others by police officers, lawyers and a member of provincial assembly.

They said that the police should be aware of the rights given them globally under the United Nations charter. They deplored that there were many complaints and instances about violation of children’s rights in juvenile prisons in the country.

MPA Humera Alwani appreciated the Society for organizing the seminar and assured that she would play her positive role for creating awareness about children’s rights. Zia Ahmed Awan said that the Sindh Children Act 1955 was a comprehensive law about children rights but could not be implemented properly. He attached importance to creating awareness in the ranks of police and suggested that efforts should be made in this respect by all segments of society including the government.

Deputy National Coordinator Arshad Mahmood briefed the participants about the salient features of Juvenile Justice System Ordinance.
