HARIPUR, March 7: Law-enforcement personnel picked up an American national from Ghazi Bazaar, some45 km from here, on Tuesday. “We are unable to confirm in what activities he (US national) was involved and why he has been taken into custody,” said a police official, requesting anonymity.

Informed sources said the American, identified as Alex Bryan, was picked up by plainclothesmen from a rented house where was reported to have been living for the past two and a half months.

Mr Bryan, who is in his 30s, is reported to have developed friendship with a resident of Ghazi Tehsil, Asif, and had stayed in his home three months ago.

Police quoted Asif as saying that Mr Bryan was jobless and had come to Pakistan to find a job in a fast food restaurant.

It is not clear whether secret agencies have found any clue to the purpose of Mr Bryan’s stay near the Tarbela dam and where he has been taken to.
