Dennis Francis, the president of the UN General Assembly, has called for UN states to provide “sustainable and predictable financial and political support” to UNRWA, the largest aid agency operating in Gaza, as it struggles to address the “biggest humanitarian crisis since its establishment”, Al Jazeera reports.

Francis, responding to a letter from UNRWA Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, said “UNRWA has been an indispensable lifeline for millions of Palestinians”.

UNRWA, which provides healthcare, education and other vital services to the Palestinian people, was accused by Israel last month of having links to the Hamas attack on southern Israel on October 7, prompting more than 10 donor countries, including the US, Germany and Canada, to suspend financial support. The UNRWA maintains Israel has yet to provide proof in support of its allegations.

UNRWA warned on Thursday it had reached a “breaking point” due to the lack of funds.
