Israeli envoy to the UN urges UNRWA head to resign

The Israeli representative to the United Nations has called on the UNRWA chief to take responsibility and resign over alleged use of the UN agency’s schools by Hamas, Al Jazeera reports.

Erdan’s call came after a tweet by Philippe Lazzarini denying the agency’s knowledge of the existence of Hamas tunnels under the UNRWA’s premises in Gaza, as claimed by the Israeli military earlier.

Erdan said in a tweet in response to the agency’s commissioner-general: “It’s not that you didn’t know, you didn’t want to know.”

“We exposed the terror tunnels under UNRWA schools and provided evidence that Hamas exploits UNRWA,” he also said.

“We implored you to carry out a comprehensive search of all UNRWA facilities in Gaza. But not only did you refuse, you chose to stick your head in the sand.”
