KARACHI, Feb 27: City Nazim Syed Mustafa Kamal here on Monday emphasized the need for carrying out consultation for implementation of a new traffic control system to bring the city’s traffic system at par with developed cities of the world.

With the implementation of the Intelligence Traffic Control System, efficient monitoring of traffic could be ensured through latest technology from a control-room, said the Nazim while addressing the first meeting of Karachi Traffic Management Board (KTMB).

DCO Fazlur Rahman, DIG Traffic, Falak Khursheed, EDO Transport Athar Hussain, members KTMB, Tasneem Siddiqui, Sami Mustafa, Sarosh Lodhi of NED University, representatives of transport department and mediamen were present.

Highlighting the significance of conducting consultations, Kamal said it would greatly help determine requirements for implementation of the ITC system, like the number of cameras to be installed and their installation points.

He said that the traffic management board was established for a better coordination between the city government and the traffic police and said that their combined efforts would bring significant improvement in the traffic system.

The nazim said that the city government intends to give latest facilities to the traffic police, besides equipping them with modern equipment.

Regarding parking issue, he said that the city government would establish eight parking plazas in the city and each would have the capacity of parking at least 800 vehicles. Saddar would be made parking-free zone, he added.

Mr Kamal informed that the KBCA had been directed to ensure that no new building without parking facility be constructed in the city while any new building without this facility would be demolished.

The nazim said the formation of the traffic management board was aimed at ensuring provision of modern facilities and equipment to the traffic police and encouraging public-private partnership.—APP
