KARACHI: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Friday laid the foundation stone of a water supply and sewerage system project in Soba Nagar in Gulshan-i-Iqbal which he claimed was part of the citywide plan.

Addressing the foundation stone laying ceremony of the plan, he said the Sindh government had launched a comprehensive strategy to improve the water and sewerage system in Karachi and the benefits of which would be received by the citizens.

“Under the project in this area, new pipelines are being laid replacing the old ones. This project will be completed within 12 months, which will fulfill the requirements of the area in terms of water supply and drainage. And this system would remain effective and intact till 2050,” he added.

He said that four water pipelines of 75-to-200-mm diameter and four RCC sewerage lines of nine-to-18-inch diameter were being laid in the neighbourhoods, besides an underground water tank of 50,000 gallons and an overhead water tank of 20,000 gallons were also being built as water reservoir.

“In the past, contaminated water was supplied here and due to leakage from sewerage lines, there was dirt and filth everywhere,” said Mayor Wahab. “Fixing the supply and drainage system would improve the health and sanitation situation in this area and the installation of new pipelines would also protect the roads of the area from the breakdown due to accumulation of overflowed sewage.”

He said the efforts were on to improve the basic civic infrastructure and solve public problems in every area of Karachi without any discrimination. Another project on the same pattern, he said, was also being designed for Essa Nagri.
