Gohar named Under-14 team coach

LAHORE, Feb 25: Gohar Zaman, the man who scored the only hat trick for Pakistan in World Cup football history has joined coaching staff which is imparting training in National U-14 football camp.

The camp is currently in progress at Punjab Stadium.

Gohar appeared in World Cup qualifiers 2001 and two Asian Cups in 1996 and 2000 after wearing the Pakistani colour for the first time in Atlanta Olympics Qualifiers in 1995.

The most memorable moment for NWFP’s Gohar, was 17th World Cup qualifiers when at Beirut, on May 17, 2001, he became the only Pakistani to score hat trick in FIFA’s showpiece event. He completed hat trick within 13 minutes against Sri Lanka in 3-3 draw.

Gohar who is a qualified coach will impart training to altogether 97 players for preparing two national U-19 teams for the international football festival which will be hosted by Pakistan in April.

Meanwhile, 18 players who were selected from three day open trials held here recently joined the already selected 79 players in the camp.

The 18 players are: (Punjab) Abu Bakar, Rana Ahsan, Navees, Raees, Faraz, Talha, Umer Ali, Shahid, Farooq, Shah Nawaz Sr, Shah Nawaz Jr, Hamza, Farrukh, Umer Akhter (Sindh), Ali Rizvi, (Fata) Bismillah, (DPS) Ahsan Ashraf, (Railways), Ali Raza.—APP
