PESHAWAR, Feb 25: The Town Council-II has called upon the district government to release operational grant to provide municipal facilities to people. The demand for the Rs111.7 million grant has been made in a five-page document sent to the district government by the Town-II nazim, says a source.

The request follows a provincial government’s directive that the district government should fulfil the requirements of its four town councils before preparing the Annual Development Programme.

District nazim Ghulam Ali has convened a meeting of the district consultation committee on Tuesday to discuss the demand.

The Town-II nazim says in his document that for 25 union councils in the town there are only 23 sweepers, 24 gardeners, one water-tanker, one multi-loader and two road-rollers. These are not enough to cater to the needs of a population of 5,037,000 population. He said most of the equipment and vehicles had become outdated and most of the funds were spent on their maintenance.

The nazim demanded that there should be 250 sweepers, 250 class-IV staff, two containers, 10 multi-loaders, 10 trucks with blades, two small vehicles for sprinkling water and two fire-brigades. Besides, he said, five tube-wells and sanitation pipes should be installed in the town.

The nazim said that the Town-II administration had planned to repair old mosques and roads apart from improving the civic facilities.
