KARACHI, Feb 25: The former city nazim of Karachi, Niamatullah Khan, on Friday demanded the Sindh government to fill all posts above grade 11 through the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) on merit basis and refrain from recruitment of doctors on contractual basis.

In a statement, Niamat said decision of recruitments by bypassing the SPSC on contractual basis amounted to violation of merit and would lead to opening doors for corruption and depriving deserving people of employment opportunities.

Niamat said the said trend would discourage the deserving and qualified youth, especially those who were not affiliated to any political party.

“Since 1987, getting employment without the support of any political party has become impossible and this must end now,” he said. He said he had maintained a policy of strict merit during his term of office.

He said that he had recruited demonstrators and doctors at the Karachi Medical and Dental College through the SPSC on merit although as chairman of the college’s governing body, he had the right to recruit people directly.

Niamat said during his term, the Sindh government had requested for lifting ban on recruitment in public sector but he did not approve these requests just for the sake of merit.

He said soon after the completion of his tenure, direct recruitment on such a large scale was proof of his claims that he had been under pressure to grant employments violating merit.
