Golf: Waseem emerges on top

KARACHI, Feb 24: Favourite Waseem Rana topped the leaderboard with five-stroke leads on the opening day of the 6th Sindh Amateur golf championship which commenced on Friday at the Karachi Golf Club.

Talented Waseem fired a one-under 71 on Friday in the 54-holes competition under pleasant weather conditions.

He had a bogey-free round and hit a birdie on the par-5 fifth hole and is well placed for the top position after taking lead of five strokes.

As many as 60 leading amateur golfers started their quest for honours with 20 seniors and 12 juniors on the opening day of the competition.

Sohail K. Rana finished second with a score of four-over 76 Followed by Shahid Warraich with 77. At 78, is Zahid Ibrahim followed by Ayaz Peer (79).

Sohail is on first place with a score of 76 in the Seniors category. He is followed by Zaheer Chaudhry at 84 and Nayyar Hasnain at 85.

In the Juniors’, ASCC’s Ghufran Ghani shot an 81 and leads the pack of 12 juniors with defending champion Hamza Haroon at 83 along with Usman Riaz on second spot. Kumail Wazir is at 84 and Inamullah Abdullah at 85.

Saturday will be the final day for the seniors and juniors while the amateur event would continue till Sunday.—PPI
