Published February 23, 2006

WANA, Feb 22: A pro-government tribal chief was killed in an ambush in Wana, South Waziistan Agency, on Wednesday. Eyewitnesses said that gunmen opened fire on a vehicle in the main Wana bazaar, carrying Malik Arsallah Khan, chief of the Khuniakhel Wazir tribe, and some of his family members.

Malik Arsallah died on the spot while three of his relatives were injured. They were taken to a local hospital.

Sources said that the late chieftain staunchly supported the military operation against foreign militants in the restive agency and was very active in persuading tribesmen against militancy.
