COPENHAGEN, Feb 21: Denmark’s ambassador to Indonesia returned to Jakarta on Tuesday and will reopen the embassy as soon as possible, the Danish foreign ministry said.

The embassy was temporarily closed on Feb 11 after more than 150 hardliners stormed a high-rise building housing the Danish Embassy and burned the Danish flag. Indonesia berated Denmark for what it said was a hasty decision to withdraw.

Ambassador Niels Erik Andersen returned on Tuesday, but it was not immediately clear when the embassy would reopen, the foreign ministry said.

On Friday, Denmark temporarily closed its embassy in Pakistan following violent protests over the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) cartoons. Danish embassies in Lebanon, Syria, and Iran have also been temporarily closed, after anti-Danish protests and threats against staff.

The Danish government repeatedly said it had not cut diplomatic ties with those countries.—AP
