RAHIM YAR KHAN: Leakage of ammonia gas in a cold storage created panic in the fruit and vegetable market and its adjoining areas at Khanpur on Saturday morning.

According to Rescue 1122 sources, they received information at 7:34am that ammonia gas was leaking from an industrial compressor installed in the Hammad Cold Storage.

Initial reports said the gas leakage started due to rupture of the seal of the main valve of the compressor, they added. Rescue personal immediately reached the spot and after hectic efforts close the main valve of the compressor, stopping the gas leakage.

Ammonia gas can be fatal for human beings as well as animals if inhaled for a prolonged time.

The owner of the cold Storage, Muhammd Daanish, told Dawn that the leakage was minor and it was controlled in time by the rescuers.

He claimed that cold storage management was conscious about the safety of people and was following all the standard operating procedures.
