EXPORT TARGET: The Pakistan Textile Exporters Association (PTEA) has warned that if immediate steps were not taken to reduce the cost of production it will not be possible to achieve the export target.

PTEA chairman Rana Arif Tauseef, while talking to newsmen, expressed grave concern over the decline in export of certain textile items quoting the figures released by the Federal Bureau of Statistics.

According to the bureau report, exports of cloth in July 2005 was 302 million metric tons. It fell in August to 273 million metric tons, in September to 264 million metric tons, in October 204 million metric tons and in November to 177 million metric tons.

The PTEA chief said the above facts were a proof of a consistent declining trend in the exports of textile products — cloth and bed-linen.

Giving reasons for the decline, Mr Tauseef pointed out that it was due to high cost of production in Pakistan than in other countries of the region. Resultantly foreign buyers were going to India, Bangladesh and China, he added.

He said the cost of inputs like electricity, gas, petrol and taxes were very high in Pakistan which ultimately increase cost of production.

He gave the rates of different inputs and taxes in Bangladesh and India and drew the attention of officials concerned towards them urging them to cut their cost so that Pakistan could compete in international market.
