Cancer awareness

Published November 2, 2023

THE awareness level about lung cancer that affects millions of individuals worldwide happens to be rather low in our society. Every year since 1995, November is marked globally as lung cancer awareness month, and this might be a good time for us to wake up to the reality and become a part of the global campaign to prioritise education and prevention in the fight against this deadly menace.

Lung cancer is often referred to as the silent killer because it frequently goes undetected in its early stages. Early detection is critical in terms of impro-ving chances of survival. This can only be achieved through heightened awareness and regular screening. Unfor- tunately, this is precisely what we lack in Pakistani society.

Tobacco smoking is the leading cause of lung cancer, and it is crucial to educate people about the dangers of smoking, and encourage them to quit. Additionally, non-smokers can also develop lung cancer due to exposure to secondhand smoke, radon gas, air pollution, and other environmental factors.

These risks need to be communicated at a mass level effectively so that people may make informed choices regarding their health, and the health of those around them. We must also promote the importance of routine lung cancer screenings, especially for those at a higher risk, such as long-term smokers or individuals with a family history of the disease.

Early cancer diagnosis can significantly improve the chances of successful treatment. Let us strive to make lung cancer a thing of the past and ensure a healthier, cancer-free future for all.
