KARACHI: An antiterrorism court has exonerated three accused in a case pertaining to an attack on the Sindh Secretariat in 1995.

Ahmed Saeed alias Saeed Bharam, Mohammad Nasir alias Khaji and Mohammad Faheem alias Mirchi, said to be associated with the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, were charged with attacking the Sindh Secretariat with rockets and grenades some 28 years ago.

After recording the evidence of witnesses and concluding arguments from both sides, the ATC-IV acquitted the accused persons for lack of evidence.

The prosecution said that the Rangers had arrested the accused in 2016 and detained them for 90-day preventive detention, and during interrogation they had allegedly confessed to attacking the Sindh Secretariat with rockets and hand grenades in 1995 and also disclosed their involvement in several other cases.

Thereafter, they had been handed over to police and the accused had been charge-sheeted in several cases, including Sindh Secretariat attack case.

A case (FIR No.301/1995) was lodged about attack on the secretariat under Sections 324 (attempt to commit murder) and 427 (mischief causing damage to the amount of fifty rupees) of the Pakistan Penal Code read with Section ¾ of the Explosive Substances Act at the Artillery Maidan police station.
