QUETTA, Feb 11: Three paramilitary personnel and a civilian were killed and 12 others seriously injured in two separate incidents on Saturday in the Tump and Kahan areas of Balochistan, officials said.

“Yes, three FC soldiers lost their lives and 10 injured in two incidents,” an official said, adding that one citizen was also killed in the rocket attack.

A convoy of Frontier Corps was attacked with rockets and automatic weapons while it was on its way to Mand from Tump, a town on the Pak-Iran border.

Suspected tribesmen perched on a hilltop fired rockets at the convoy when it crossed the town and opened indiscriminate fire on the FC personnel, sources said.

“A rocket hit the vehicle that was leading the convoy. As a result, two FC men were killed on the spot,” the sources said. A civilian who was riding a motorcycle also came under fire.

The motorcyclist died in the attack while a pillion passenger riding with him received injuries.

The attackers fled into the mountains when FC personnel took positions and returned fire, sources said.

The FC men who were killed in the rocket attack were identified as Shahid Iqbal and Saghar Ahmed while the civilian victim was identified as Rehmatullah.

The injured men were rushed to the FC hospital in Turbat for treatment.

Sources said that four FC personnel who received multiple injuries after being struck with rocket splinters were said to be in a critical condition.

Another FC soldier was killed and five others, including a civilian, were injured when two landmines exploded in the Kahan area of Kohlu district, officials told Dawn.

A landmine blast injured a civilian in the Kahan area on Saturday. Paramilitary troops rushed to the site and rescued the injured man. But the vehicle carrying the FC rescue team also struck a landmine just as it was making its way to a nearby hospital.

One FC personnel identified as Shams-ur-Rehman was killed in the landmine blast.

The injured were admitted to a nearby FC hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) and Baloch Liberation Front (BLF) claimed responsibility for the two attacks through its joint spokesman Azad Baloch.

“We accept responsibility for the incidents,” he told reporters via satellite phone from an undisclosed location.
