GILGIT, Feb 11: A cleric was shot at and injured by unidentified assailants here on Saturday. Police reached the scene after an hour and said that the unknown assailants ambushed Qari Yaseen, resident of Astore district, and shot him behind Madina Supermarket as he was going home.

The assailants reportedly fired at him from behind a wall in Majeeni Mohallah, some local residents said.

They said the injured cleric received two bullets, one on his jaw and another in the back.

He was taken to the DHQ hospital where his condition is said to be out of danger.

The shops and markets in Old Cinema Bazaar were closed as the news of the firing incident spread.

However, a police official said: “The situation is under control.” Police have registered an FIR against the unidentified attackers.
