BAJAUR: The Bajaur district administration on Wednesday fixed new fares for public transport on intra-district routes following the recent cut in the prices of petroleum products made by the caretaker federal government.

“We are pleased to announce that the representatives of transporters’ unions have agreed to make up to 20 per cent decrease in public transport fares on all local routes in the wake of the recent significant decrease in fuel prices,” a statement issued from the deputy commissioner’s office said.

The statement said the decision was made during a meeting between assistant commissioner, Khar, Mohibullah Khan Yousafzai and representatives of transporters.

It said the assistant commissioner informed the participants about the district administration’s plan to decrease the fares of public transport after the recent huge cut in rates of petroleum products. He told the transporters that the administration wanted the residents to benefit from the decrease in oil prices.

The statement said though some representatives of transporters were not willing to decrease the fares immediately, a majority agreed to the district administration’s decision to reduce the fares.

The statement said the new fares had been implemented from Wednesday and a new fare list issued. It said strict action would be taken against those violating the new fare list.

It was also decided at the meeting that transporters would fix the fresh fare list at a prominent place in their vehicles.

Though the JAAC’s demands are open to scrutiny, banning any political organisation — as long as it remains committed to peaceful activism — is undemocratic.
