KARACHI: Justice Irfan Saadat Khan, the senior most judge of the Sindh High Court, on Tuesday took the oath as acting chief justice of the SHC.

Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, who has now become second in line on the seniority list of the SHC’s judges, administered the oath.

SHC judges and a large number of lawyers attended the oath-taking a ceremony held on the premises of the high court.

Justice Khan will run the affairs of SHC as acting top judge till the appointment of a regular chief justice by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP).

Born on Feb 7, 1963 in Karachi, the acting CJ was appointed a judge of the SHC on Sept 25, 2009. He was enrolled as an advocate of the subordinate judiciary and high court in 1989 and 1991, respectively.

Judicial sources said that Justice Khan would be appointed either as permanent chief justice of the SHC or elevated to the Supreme Court in the upcoming meeting of the JCP as two posts of judges are presently vacant at the apex court.
