BADIN, Feb 2: Former Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali has said that dams are necessary for development of agriculture and economy of the country. Addressing a gathering at residence of PML leader Haji Sher Jamali on Thursday, he said people of Sindh and Balochistan should profoundly study the issue of dams before taking a decision. Decision on such a sensitive issue should not be taken in haste.

He said small provinces needed guarantees either from the apex court or constitutional guarantee and people of those provinces must be taken into confidence on the issue.

He said till the decision on dams irrigation water be provided under the ’91 water accord.

Mr Jamali was on a personal tour of the district and receptions were hosted in his honour by Dr Fehmida Mirza at Morjhar, Sikandar Ali Jamali at Lowari Sharif, Syed Ali Bux Shah alias Papoo Shah at Vanai Sharif, Mir Abdul Qadir Jamali at Talhar and other prominent political people.

Zafarullah Jamali said that instead of conducting operations in Balochistan, the government should hold talks with Baloch leaders and eliminate sense of deprivation among the people of the province.

About MQM chief’s statement, he said that Altaf Hussain was just a name for the people of Balochistan who have not seen his face. How could he be aware of the problems of Baloch people.

He said Baloch people would solve their problems themselves.

He said that instead of issuing red notices against Benazir Bhutto and Asif Zardari, the government should allow Ms Bhutto, Mr Zardari and Nawaz Sharif to return to the country.

DISTRICT COUNCIL: The district council Badin through a resolution, opposed the construction of Kalabagh dam.

Terming it against the interests of Sindh, the members said that not only Kalabagh dam, but no mega water project should be implemented without people’s consent.

They also passed a resolution that NFC award be given on the basis of the revenue and natural resources. The meeting was chaired by the convenor Abdul Aziz Dero, which was attended by 58 out of 65 members of the council.

The council rejected all the 97 schemes which were proposed by the district nazim, Anwar Ali Halepoto and recommended the government for immediate transfer of the district engineer (works and services) Badin, Shoukat Ali Memon for calling the tenders of these schemes.

The council observed that the district nazim had recommended the schemes in a hurry as a large number of schemes given to Matli, the constituency of the district nazim, without approving the same from the council.

The council decided that all the schemes should come through the nazims of the concerned union councils.
