KARACHI: Under the supervision of Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, sanitation workers lifted over 91,752 tonnes of offal and animal remains and shifted to landfill sites by Saturday evening from all over the metropolis during the three days of Eidul Azha.

Unlike previous years, the city’s main arteries gave a cleaner look during the three days of Eid; however the sanitation situation remained critical at nooks and corners of several localities.

Residents of slums and informal housing in parts of the city complained that the sanitation staff focused more on the main streets and roads in removing offal and remains of sacrificial animals delaying sanitation operations in their areas.

Mayor Wahab, along with Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) Managing Director Syed Imtiaz Shah, visited many localities of the city during the three days of the religious festival to review the mega sanitation operation.

However, the SSWMB said that the over 24,000 sanitation workers performed their duties round the clock in shifts during three days of Eid and timely removed over 91,752 tonnes of offal and animal remains by Saturday evening.

Meanwhile, the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan expressed its concern over the ‘poor’ cleaning arraignments on the occasion of Eidul Azha in Karachi and Hyderabad.

A statement issued by the party’s coordination committee said that there were piles of garbage in the two cities, but the administration was seen nowhere during the Eid days.

It apprehended outbreak of diseases due to filth and garbage in the two major urban parts of the province.
