KARACHI: The Sindh transport department claimed to have taken action against many illegal bus stands in the metropolis as well as transporters charging extra fare from passengers.

The actions were taken on the special instructions of Minister of Information, Transport and Mass Transit Sharjeel Inam Memon, said a press release issued on Sunday.

It said that the transport department removed illegal bus stands at Taj Complex, Rainbow Centre in Saddar and Sagheer Hussain Shaheed Road in the city.

Action was also taken against transporters who were charging extra fare on the occasion of Eid in various districts.

The officials of the transport department imposed fines totaling up to Rs147,000 on individuals who were found guilty of charging extra fare.

Transporters charging extra fare from passengers fined

The officials also confiscated the extra fare collected by the transporters, a sum of Rs323,000, and returned it to the passengers.

A total of 489 vehicles were inspected by the department and necessary actions were taken based on passengers’ complaints.

The action was taken in many districts of the province including Karachi, Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Larkana, Thatta, Badin, Tharparkar, Umerkot, Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze, Ghotki, Khairpur, Jacobabad, Shikarpur, and Dadu.

In a statement, Minister Memon expressed Sindh government’s commitment to providing various forms of relief to the people.

He emphasised that those who caused inconvenience to passengers would not be spared.

Transport Secretary Saleem Rajput announced that the campaign against the collection of extra fares would continue even after Eid.
