KARACHI, Jan 25: A taxi driver was injured when unknown persons opened fire in Baloch Para on Jehangir Road following a scuffle between two groups. Police resorted to shelling and baton-charge to control the situation as enraged people damaged windscreens of around a dozens parked cars.

Police said trouble started when some youth in Baloch Para shouted at a girl, following which they were beaten up by the area people.

After this, the youth reached the locality and resorted to firing, injuring a taxi driver, Altaf. The suspects fled following the firing. Later, the area people took to streets and damaged around a dozen cars. Trouble spread to Jehangir Road which remained blocked around four hours, causing a serious traffic mess in the area. The injured was taken to Civil Hospital where he was provided treatment.

ROBBED: An official of the Watch and Ward Department of the University of Karachi was robbed of Rs34,000 by four unknown suspects on the campus on Wednesday. The bandits also resorted to firing before fleeing.

Sources said two officials of the Watch and Ward Department Inspector Nisar and Javed were heading to their office after withdrawing Rs34,000 from the NBP branch under the head of over-time for employees of their department.

They were intercepted by four suspects near Dr Mehmood Husain Library who snatched Rs 34,000 from Nisar and also took away a cellphone.

CELLPHONES: At least 37 people were deprived of their cellphones at various places here on Wednesday.

According to police, 13 people reported that the bandits snatched their mobile phones at gunpoint in different localities. However, 24 other people reported to the police that they had been deprived of cellphones during pickpocketing.
