KARACHI, Jan 24: A high-level meeting, chaired by Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, on Tuesday chalked out a comprehensive strategy for maintenance of law and order, smooth flow of traffic, removal of encroachments, provision of civic facilities and improvement of sanitary conditions in the city.

Dr Ishratul Ibad asked the town nazims to ensure that there would be no further encroachments in their respective areas and identify the encroachers to the TPO concerned. He directed the CCPO to post honest and duty-bound officers by replacing those involved in patronising encroachments and crimes. He also called for demolition of illegal structures in their respective jurisdictions.

Stressing the need for better co-ordination between town nazims and police to improve law and order, he asked the city police chief to seek written assurance from TPOs that there were no illegal activities in their respective jurisdictions. He further asked the police officials to work for elimination of mini-cinema houses, gambling and drugs dens. He also issued directives for immediately imposing ban on business of rent-a-motorcycle.

About Muharram arrangements, he asked town nazims to hold meetings with ulema and management of Muharram processions and keep close interaction with them. He emphasized the need for improving sanitary condition and ensuring water and power supply at and around Muharram processions’ routes and venues of majalis.

The meeting also reviewed other affairs pertaining to city district government and towns.

City Nazim Mustafa Kamal highlighted various measures taken by the city government. He said that garbage removal and disposal system would be handed over to private sector from Feb 15. He also apprised the meeting about revenue collection by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board and other departments of city government.

On directives of the governor, he said, mechanised sweeping of major roads of the metropolis would begin from Feb 1, 2006 as mechanical sweeping machines and vehicles had arrived in Karachi from Turkey.

Among others, the meeting was attended by Sindh Planning and Development Minister Shoaib Bukhari, Local Government Adviser Wasim Akhtar, Finance Adviser M.A. Jalil, City Nazim Mustafa Kamal, Naib Nazim Nasreen Jalil, DCO Fazlur Rehman, CCPO Niaz Siddiqui, Lyari Expressway Project Director Shafiqur Rehman Paracha, all town nazims and TMOs.

DELEGATION: A delegation of the Sportsmen Trust called on Sindh Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad Khan at the Governor’s House on Tuesday evening.

During the meeting the delegation presented a cheque for Rs8,181,680 towards the President Relief Fund for earthquake survivors0.

The amount for the fund was collected by renowned sportsmen by visiting different areas of the city.

Those who met the Sindh governor included Javed Miandad, Jehangir Khan, Salahuddin Salu, Moin Khan and Islahuddin.

The governor lauded the spirit of the sportsmen and appreciated their efforts for the relief of the earthquake survivors.

The members of the delegation thanked the governor for setting up an endowment fund for the sportsmen and legends of various fields.

They said the need for such a fund had been felt for a long period and the governor by establishing the fund had taken a historic step.

They said that for the welfare of the legends and their dependents on a permanent basis this was an important step taken by him.–-PPI/APP
