HOUSTON, Jan 23: A large number of people attended a meeting held here on Saturday to mark the 102nd birth anniversary of G. M. Syed and to pay tribute to his non-violent struggle against fundamentalism and for the cause of Sindh.

According to a press release, Texas Governor Rick Perry sent his greetings to the gathering and Houston Mayor Bill White announced it as “G. M. Syed Day for the City of Houston.”

Scholars Dr Lester Kurts and Dr Yvette Rosser presented papers on non-violence and self-determination, highlighting the work of Gandhi and Bacha Khan who were a great inspiration for Mr Syed.

Community leaders, Jamil Daudi of the Sindhi Association of North America, Noorunissa Ghangro and Dr Zia Shah of the G. M. Syed Memorial Committee, and Dr Saghir Shaikh, chairman of the World Sindhi Congress, addressed the meeting.

The meeting adopted resolutions, supporting Sindh’s demand for its rights, its opposition to building dams on the Indus and criticizing the use of military force in Balochistan.
