KARACHI, Jan 23: A postgraduate diploma in bioethics was introduced at Dewan Farooq Medical Centre of the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation on Monday.

The diploma programme has been organized by the Centre of Biomedical Ethics and Culture of SIUT in collaboration with the University of Karachi. This is the first programme on bioethics in Pakistan.

Dr Adibul Hasan Rizvi said that purpose of the country’s first diploma programme in bioethics was to ingrain in the participants, who were trainees in medical and related fields the importance of ethics in all functions of operations.

Dr Farhat Moazzam introduced the participants of the programme, representing both the public as well as the private sectors. She said the postgraduate diploma through Karachi University would seed the idea of capacity building. The structured programme was said to be over one year.

Prof Manzoor Ahmed welcomed the inception of the diploma programme and described it as an extremely important addition to the academic calendar of Karachi University.

Dr Sahin Aksey of Harran University Turkey delivered the lecture “Significance of Ishaq Ibn Al-Ruhawis’ Adab Al-Tabib” in medical ethics.—PPI/APP
