KARACHI, Jan 22: Jalil Khan produced a sterling show as he downed Nomi Qamar in three sets in the robin league round matches to record his second win in the Davis Cup trials at Karachi Gymkhana on Sunday. Jalil, ranked third in Pakistan behind elder brother Aqeel Khan and Asim Shafiq, looked in great form while thrashing Nomi 6-3, 6-1, 6-1.

Jalil has won both of his matches; Nomi triumphed in one and lost the other while Asim Shafiq also won both of his matches.

Nomi will have to beat Asim to find a place in Pakistan squad.

In another league match Muhammad Shafiq recovered after dropping the opening game to beat Inam Gul 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2.

Pakistan Tennis Federation is conducting the trials to select a four-member squad for the Davis Cup tie against Chinese Taipei to be held in Chinese Taipei next month.

Pakistan’s two top players Aisamul Haq and Aqeel Khan are exempted from the trials.

In junior trials Danish Ahmed beat Hidayatullah 6-2, 6-1; Yasir Khan beat Tanveer Ashiq 6-2, 7-6, and Omer Babar beat Khurram Nazir 6-4, 6-4.—APP
