PESHAWAR: That a great political awakening has taken place among the tribesmen of the North-West Frontier drawing them close to their Muslim brothers in Pakistan is seen in this unusual experience of Dawn’s Special Representative after the Quaid-i-Azam had addressed the grand Tribal Jirga attended by nearly 200 tribal maliks on Saturday last [April 17]. After the Jirga broke up, an old bearded malik in tattered clothes buttonholed Dawn’s Representative and said: … “Please reassure our brother Muslims of Pakistan that they have nothing to fear from us. They can leave us to guard the North-West Frontier. Pakistan is as much our country as theirs and we will guard it as we guard our own freedom… .”

[Meanwhile, as reported from Cape Town,] Field Marshal Jan Smuts, the South African Premier, told the British Empire Service League Conference here today [April 19]: “Germany is dead, possible for the next 100 years, just as she was dead after the hundred years war. … Poison has been taken out of that menace to civilization. Communism has not been dealt with yet,” he added. — News agencies
