SUKKUR, Jan 9: The president of the Sindh chapter of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy, Mr Zain Ansari, has said that the Jan 18 public meeting in Hyderabad will be a referendum against the controversial Kalabagh dam.
He was speaking at a press conference at the residence of district Pakistan Muslim League-N president Hafiz Sadiq Samejo in Ghotki on Monday.
He asked the Muttahida Qaumi Movement leadership to join hands with Sindhis in the struggle against the Kalabagh project.
Mr Ansari said the people of Sindh would sacrifice their lives but would not allow construction of any dam on the River Indus.
He termed 2006 the year of democracy and said a caretaker setup might be introduced the country.
BURNT: A woman and 20 cattlehead were burnt alive and three houses were gutted when a fire broke out in the Laiq Jat village near Kandhkot on Monday.
The fire broke out in the house of Mir Jat and engulfed nearby houses.
The woman killed was identified as Sehat Khatoon.
LAND DISPUTE: A man was axed to death by some people over a land dispute in the Dost Mohammad Chand village near Moro on Monday.
Syed Kamil Shah was going to his agricultural land when the accused attacked and injured him. He was taken to a hospital in Nawabshah where he died.
Later, his cousin lodged an FIR at the Moro police station against Abbas Shah, Essa Shah, Rajab Shah and Asghar Shah. Police arrested Abbas and Essa.
ROBBED: An electronic dealer, Ashok Kumar, was robbed of Rs80,000 by three armed bandits in Sarrafa Bazaar of Kandhkot on Sunday night.
GRAIN MARKET: The district administration has decided to shift grain market, iron market and slaughterhouse outside of the Sukkur city.
This was decided at a meeting here on Monday.
District Nazim Nasir Hussain Shah, Taluka Nazim Naeem Siddiqui and New Sukkur Taluka Nazim Abdul Haque Chohan participated in the meeting.
It was decided in the meeting to form a committee to survey the site for shifting of grain and iron markets and slaughterhouse outside the city and submit their suggestion to the district nazim.
The district nazim directed the taluka municipal officer, New Sukkur to remove illegal encroachments from the grain market within fifteen days.
The nazim instructed the executive engineer of Hesco to submit report about electric poles and transformers requirements.
The nazim said the committee constituted would first visit Punjab prior to shifting and slaughterhouse would be shifted near the cattle market Rohri as per the proposal of butchers.
