Khar to play active role in PPP

Published January 10, 2006

LAHORE, Jan 9: Former governor Ghulam Mustafa Khar has decided to play an active role in the PPP, without harbouring ambition for any party office.

At a news conference here on Monday, he said he would organize a workers meeting in Multan on Jan 19, after which more steps would be announced to strengthen the party.

He said workers would be asked to give proposals which would be forwarded to Ms Benazir Bhutto for approval.

Khar had met Ms Bhutto in London and was directed to keep silent till further instructions. He held another meeting with the PPP chairperson and was told to assure various party leaders that he did not plan to replace any of them.

Accordingly, he met various leaders, including Jehangir Badr, Khalid Kharl and Aurangzeb Burki. He said he was going to establish a contact with the party workers.

Provincial information secretary Naveed Chaudhry told a separate news conference that so far the party had not received any instructions from Ms Bhutto about the status of Khar or whether he was a member of the party.

He said since Khar’s position in the party was not clear, he was not in a position to say if any office-bearer of the provincial organization would participate in the Jan 19 workers meeting.— Staff Reporter
