PESHAWAR, Jan 9: The police department has sought Rs150 million from the provincial government for rebuilding its damaged infrastructure in five quake-hit districts of the NWFP, official said.

The department has claimed that Oct 8 quake incurred Rs200 million losses to its infrastructure in the five districts. A senior police official told Dawn that they had asked the government to release at least Rs150 million immediately for reconstruction of essential infrastructure.

He said that the department had made makeshift arrangements for its force providing security to aid workers and organisations.

“Our first priority is to restore mobility of police force and reconstruct police stations and pickets at key locations in these areas”, the official said.

He said that the quake had affected about 1,100 police officials, its entire network, vehicles and communication system while arms and ammunition were either destroyed or partially damaged.

After the earthquake the government had dispatched contingents of the Frontier Reserve Police from different parts of the province and deployed Frontier Constabulary to cope with the law and order situation in the devastated areas.— Bureau
