KARACHI, Jan 2: The city government plans to introduce a road safety education and training programme for teachers and students in order to acquaint them about road safety codes and traffic laws.

A city government official told Online on Monday that the programme had basically been conceived for students, especially schoolchildren, as 26 per cent children fell victims to road accidents in the city every year.

He said that a 20-minute documentary had been made by the traffic and communication department of the city government on road safety and traffic laws, which would be shown to children during the training programme.

The department would also publish posters on road safety codes and traffic laws, which would be provided to all the schools falling under the jurisdiction of the city government, the official added.

He said that the programme would continue throughout the year 2006, and every month a two-day road safety education and training programme would be organized for schoolchildren and teachers.

He said from each town, 36 teachers would be invited for the programme, and the top officials from the TCD and mass transit department would deliver lectures on road safety and traffic laws.—Online
