QUETTA, Dec 28: Candidates backed by the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML) and its allies for the post of naib nazim won in most of the districts, tehsils and union councils of Balochistan, which like other provinces, went to the last phase of the local government elections on Wednesday.

The election was held in 27 districts, out of a total 28 in the province, through show of hands. The election in Kharan district could not be held on the orders of the Supreme Court.

According to unofficial results, Manzoor Ahmed Kakar of the PML was elected naib nazim of Quetta City Government with a big margin. He bagged 63 votes against 23 secured by his rival Abdul Samad, a joint candidate of opposition parties.

Abdul Baqi Barach of the ruling PML and Abdul Qadir Agha of the Pushtunkhwa Milli Awami Party were elected naib nazim of Chiltan town and Zarghoon town, respectively.

The district-wise list of winners is as under: Pishin, Hazrat Ali; Qila Abdullah, Abdul Khaliq; Chagai, Malik Mohammed Azam; Nushki, Wazir Khan Mengal; Zhob, Sarwar Khan; Qila Saifullah, Asmatullah (unopposed); Loralai, Azizur Rehman; Musakhel, Molvi Sirajuddin; Barkhan, Azam Jan (unopposed); Sibi, Syed Mohammad Anwar Shah (unopposed); Ziarat, Momin Shah; Kohlu, Nasibullah Marri (unopposed); Dera Bugti, Mohammad Rafiq Bugti (unopposed); Nasirabad, Nizamuddin; Jaffarabad, Manzoor Ahmed Jamali (unopposed); Bolan, Syed Naseer Ahmed Shah; Jhal Magsi, Mir Noor Jan (unopposed); Kalat, Molvi Abdul Rehman; Mastung, Mohammad Iqbal; Khuzdar, Sardar Sherdil Khan; Awaran, Rais Khuda-i-Dad (unopposed); Washik, Shukarullha; Lasbela, Mohammad Ibrahim Doda (unopposed); Kech, Murad Jan Gichki; Panjgur, Mohammad Akbar Baloch; and Gwadar, Abdul Ghaffar (unopposed).

Naib nazims were also elected in 36 tehsil councils of Balochistan. Candidates in 41 other tehsil councils had already been elected unopposed.

The provincial government had made strict security arrangements in Quetta and other districts to avert any untoward incident.
