TOBA TEK SINGH: Agricultural experts say increase in per acre productivity is essential to ensure food security and to meet the demand of ever-increasing population.

They were speaking to farmers here on Monday during the ongoing nine-day wheat enhancement drive being run by the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad (UAF), in collaboration with the Agriculture Extension Department.

UAF Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Iqrar Ahmad Khan said around half of the population was suffering from the malnutrition. “If we promote the use of wheat-maize mixed flour, it would help address the challenge.”

UAF local sub-campus Principal Dr Ziaur Rehman said 30,000 UAF students under the supervision of their teachers were in the fields across the province to inform the farming community about latest methods related to sowing, watering, eradication of weeds and harvesting.

UAF spokesman Professor Dr Jalal Arif said the university was providing free-of-cost quality seed to the farmers of flood-hit areas. Deputy Director Agri Extension Muhammad Aslam said his department was determined to deliver cultivation recommendations to 22,000 villages.

MUZAFFARGARH: The Department of Agriculture organised a walk and road show regarding the campaign to grow more wheat.

The walk was led by Deputy Director of Agriculture Extension Habibur Rehman who said that wheat cultivation should be done from Oct 25 to Nov 20. Students of Agricultural University Multan, UAF and Dera Ghazi Khan participated in the walk.
