KARACHI: One more patient died of dengue fever in Karachi, raising the total mortalities from the mosquito-borne viral infection in the province to 55.

Sources said the death was reported at the Indus Hospital.

According to the health department, 122 new cases of dengue fever were diagnosed in Karachi, which has reported 5,738 cases this month.

Of the total 18,377 dengue cases recorded in the province, 14,218 are reported in Karachi. Forty-eight people have died of the infection in the city this year. District Central has seen the highest number of deaths (20) followed by East (13), Korangi (5), South (4), West (3), Malir (2) and Kaemari (1).

There is no vaccine or specific treatment available for dengue fever and the only prevention is to eliminate mosquitoes.

The disease symptoms begin three to four days after infection and may include high fever, headache, vomiting and pain in muscles, joints, eyes and bones. It can also be associated with skin rashes. In the worst condition, there could be bleeding from gums, nose, mouth, ears and other parts of the body.

Patients are advised to have an examination from qualified doctors as soon as they notice signs and symptoms and follow the guidelines. Most dengue fever patients, experts say, recover without any complications.
