UAE president arriving today

ISLAMABAD, Dec 26: UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al-Nahyan will pay a day-long visit to Pakistan on Tuesday and discuss issues of bilateral, regional and international importance with President General Pervez Musharraf.

This will be his first official visit to Islamabad since assuming office after the death of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al-Nahyan on Nov 2 last year.

The UAE president has previously been to Pakistan on private hunting trips. Gen Musharraf paid an official visit to the UAE in June this year.

The UAE government pledged $100 million for the President’s Relief Fund immediately after the October 8 earthquake. It also rushed a mobile field hospital soon after the quake and has since been functioning in Muzaffarabad.

Nearly 70 flights have so far arrived from the UAE carrying 2,800 tons of relief supplies, including tents, blankets, medicines and food items.

The visit of the UAE president will provide a useful opportunity for an in-depth review of bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest to the two countries.—APP
