PESHAWAR, Dec 23: The National Accountability Bureau (NWFP) on Friday arrested four employees of the General Post Office here on charges of embezzlement in the Pakistan Military Pension Payments. The NAB alleged that they were involved in embezzlement to the tune of Rs30 million.
According to a press release, the accused — Noor Shad, Babu Jan, Umer Daraz and Sultan Hussain — were clerks in the GPO.
The NAB claimed that the arrested persons were involved in misappropriating pension payments of military pensioners, deceased pensioners and family pensioners with the connivance of officials of other departments concerned including the Accountant General Pakistan Revenue (AGPR) and Pakistan Military Accounts departments.
It is stated that on receipt of complaint, the NAB (NWFP) ordered an investigation into the fraudulent pension payments disbursed through the GPO, Peshawar, during early this year. During the course of investigation it was revealed that there existed a mega fraud in the pension payments.
In this regard five accused were arrested earlier and a reference was filed in the accountability court on Aug 3 and were undergoing trial.—Bureau Report
