NEW DELHI, Dec 23: Dense fog disrupted air and rail travel across northern India on Friday, with no flights taking off or landing at Delhi’s international airport until late morning.

Visibility was reduced to around 50 metres in the city at daybreak. The first flights were able to take off before midday, but few were landing.

“Runway visibility is 200 metres,” said T. Premnath, spokesman for the Airport Authority of India. “They can take off, and one or two have landed. But very few pilots are trying to land in these conditions.”

Thirteen international flights were among those delayed and at least 11 domestic flights were cancelled after countless delays. Many incoming flights were diverted across the region.

Frustrated passengers were huddled in the cold outside the overcrowded terminal as officials urged travellers to check their flight status before heading for the airport. —AFP
