BAJAUR: A policeman was martyred and another injured when unidentified gunmen attacked a checkpost in Mamond tehsil here on Monday.

Police and Rescue 1122 officials said the incident occurred in Sheikha Baba area when gunmen boarding a vehicle attacked the police checkpost.

Officials identified the deceased as Rahimullah and the injured as hawaldar Fazal Subhan, who was shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital, Khar.

Residents said both the deceased and wounded policemen were standing outside the post when the firing took place.

A police official told Dawn that a search operation had been launched to arrest the attackers, who managed to escape the place.

The official said an FIR of the incident had been registered.

The attack occurred weeks after two policemen were martyred when a remote-controlled blast targeted a police post in Damadola area of Mamond tehsil on August 19.

Meanwhile, people condemned the attack and called it an attempt to sabotage peace in the region.

Provincial minister Anwarzeb Khan, in a statement, expressed anger over the attack on the police post and showed his sympathies with the families of both the deceased and the wounded policemen.
