KHARAN: The students and members of civil society have demanded better facilities and permanent faculty for Nursing College of Kharan, which they said has no permanent faculty for over a year.

A student, Durdana Ashraf told Dawn that there were no permanent teachers to conduct classes and students have been coming and going back every day without studying anything.

She lamented that the college also lacked basic facilities like drinking water, transport, books, sanitation staff and necessary academic equipment.

“The college was established in 2020 and made functional the next year but despite being inaugurated thrice, no one is willing to come and teach us,” she said.

She added that Balochistan Assembly member Sanaullah Baloch, provincial secretary health and director general health department were yet to resolve the issues despite assurances.

Ms Ashraf claimed that no monthly stipend has been paid to the students for three years.

Acting Principal Muhammad Rafique told Dawn that he had written several letters to the authorities concerned over the unavailability of academic and supporting staff and lack of facilities in the college.

He said the college with 22 classrooms and 30 students was being run by him alone while the college needed at least seven teachers.

Safar Khan Baloch, a member of the civil society, told Dawn that doctors and one of the nurses in Divisional Headquarters Hospital in Kharan were requested by the authorities to conduct classes but they showed no interest, saying that “this was not a part of their official duty”.

“The tutors posted here usually get themselves transferred as the college doesn’t have adequate accommodation and no extra allowance is paid to them for serving in far-flung areas like Kharan,” said Mr Baloch.
