SOLAR ENERGY

Domestic use of solar power can offset a lot of load from the national grid. Many firms are offering domestic supply packages. The minimum package offered is between Rs1.2 and Rs1.3 million, which is unaffordable for most people living in small houses. The companies should devise packages worth no more than, say, Rs300,000, so that 80 per cent of the population living in small houses may afford it.

RULE OF LAW: The rule of law implies that the law is equal for every citizen of the state. However, this is not always the case in Pakistan. Although the state emphasises on the rule of law, the implementation remains weak. We witness this discrimination in different cases in everyday life. Even police officials behave nicely with the visibly rich, and with contempt for those who are visibly poor. The common man in Pakistan continues to get denied the basic rights. Things surely need to change.

SKILLED NURSES: We hardly appreciate our nurses as much as we appreciate the doctors. Staff nurses, responsible for the holistic care of patients, are scarce in Pakistan, especially in Balochistan. As a result, those who are professionally available remain overburdened with work and have to deal with a number of distressing issues of their own. There is only one staff nurse for over 70 patients in Balochistan, and a total of 960 staff nurses in the province against the required 10,000. The gap needs to be reduced significantly.

PEAK HOURS: I fail to understand the rationality behind charging more for power consumed during the so-called peak hours. Do the distribution companies (Discos) use high-grade fuel during these hours and low-grade for the remaining ones? Why are these peak hours fixed in the evening? Why cannot they be changed from, say, 11am to 2pm? Can somebody explain the logic?
