KARACHI, Dec 16: Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim has given his approval to the rules on prosecution, arrest and detention of police officers for their misconduct.

These rules have been prepared by the police department in pursuance of powers conferred by clause (2) of Article 155 of the Police Order, 2002. These rules, which will be called the Sindh Police Officers (Prosecution for misconduct) Rules 2005, will come into force at once.

Under rules, where an authorized officer after such inquiry is satisfied that police officer has committed misconduct and its is expedient in public interest to prosecute him under article 155, he may direct the SHO of the area to file a report under clause (2) of the said article before the court of competent jurisdiction.

Under these rules, no court shall take cognizance of an offence under Article 155 except on report submitted by the SHO concerned. After filing a report before the court, the accused police officer shall be suspended forthwith and official weapons if any issued to him shall be taken back from him.

The accused police officer will not be arrested without warrant and after arrest, he will be detained in the quarter guard of the police headquarters.—PPI
