Fishermen petition accepted

Published January 29, 2002

HUB, Jan 28: The Balochistan High Court has accepted the petition of the fishermen of Sonmiani and Damb and fixed Feb 9 for its hearing.

It was filed against the Balochistan Coastal Development Authority (BCDA), it is reliably learnt. The petitioners had challenged the notification issued by BCDA director-general asking them to seek permits for fishing.

They claimed that in a meeting of board of directors of the department the director-general had been asked to consult the fishermen about imposing non-landing fees.

But he, without consultation, had imposed a fee of Rs50,000 and Rs100,000 as fine if someone failed to submit the fee, they said.

BAN IMPOSED: A ban has been imposed on using wire net for fishing in the coastal areas of Balochistan.

This was announced by Balochistan Governor Amirul Mulk Mengal while visiting Gadani on Sunday where a jetty is being constructed.

A team of the fishermen and locals met the governor and told him the problems faced by them. They insisted on banning fishing with wire net being practised in the coastal areas.

Mr Mengal said the construction of jetties at Gadani and Damb would enable the local fishermen to enhance their production. It would not only increase revenue of the province but the country as well, he added.
