LAHORE, Dec 14: A patient with suspected haemorrhagic fever died in the South Medical Ward of the Mayo Hospital on Monday morning. Mushtaq Ahmad, 24, was brought to the hospital unconscious on late Saturday night. He was bleeding from multiple points.

Prof Javed Akram examined the patient on Sunday morning and asked doctors and nurses in the ward to isolate the patient. Consequently, the patient was isolated and kept in intensive care. However, the patient died on Monday morning.

Prof Akram told Dawn that the patient had come from a village of Gujranwala. He said he had taken the history of the patient and found that none of his family member or any villager had suffered from this fever.

He said all necessary measures had been taken, including disposing of the bedspread and fumigation of the area where the patient was kept. Prof Akram said samples of patient’s blood, sputum and urine had been sent to the National Institute of Health, Islamabad, for analysis. The director of health (communicable diseases) at the directorate of health services, Punjab, had also been informed.

He said the ward had notified that Mushtaq was suffering from haemorrhagic fever. He said he was now waiting for the samples’ report from the NIH.
