Bush slams abuse of Sunnis

Published December 13, 2005

PHILADELPHIA, Dec 12: US President George Bush on Monday said that the torture of Sunni detainees in secret Iraqi prisons was ‘unacceptable’ and called for those responsible to be punished.

“Recently, US and Iraqi troops have discovered prisons in Iraq where mostly Sunni men were held, some of whom have appeared to have been beaten and tortured,” Mr Bush said in a speech here.

“This conduct is unacceptable and the prime minister and other Iraqi officials have condemned these abuses. An investigation has been launched. And we support these efforts. Those who committed these crimes must be held to account,” the president said.
