TOBA TEK SINGH: The World Camel Day was observed at the University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF) on Wednesday to highlight the camel meat and milk benefit.

The event was arranged by the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, Directorate of Farms of the UAF, and the International Goat and Bull Association at the tent pegging ground.

In the national camel weight contest, the camels of Farrukh Ejaz bagged first and second positions with 1,417kg and 1,361kg weight and the camel owned by Babar Malik stood third with 1,280kg weight.

In the camel beauty contest, Hunain’s camel stood first, Ejaz’s second and Malik Babar’s third.

Faculty of Animal Husbandry Dean Dr Qamar Bilal said the camels of different breeds were brought to the UAF from all over the country in order to flourish the camel farming and educate the people about the benefits of camel meat and milk.

He said the livestock sector would reap the full benefits of testing and preserving the quality of the camel breed and its quality.

He said camel meat was low in fat and cholesterol, which is why it can be eaten by patients with high blood pressure and diabetes. He said June 22 was the hottest and longest day of the year which is why it is chosen for the World Camel Day because the camel is capable of living in difficult conditions amid hot weather.

International Goat and Bull Association Patron Muhammad Ashraf called for adopting the latest scientific standards to promote the best camel breeds. He said they were trying to promote camel farming in the country.

Prof Dr Riaz Ahmed Virk, Ata Muhammad Gujjar and Dr Haroon Zaman also spoke.

ACCIDENTS: A woman was injured when a pressure cooker exploded at Noorpur in Faisalabad.

Shamim Bibi, 42, was cooking meal in her kitchen when the incident took place. She was admitted to the Allied Hospital.

Two women were injured when the roof of an under-construction house caved in at Chak 469 GB, Samundri. Tanweer Bibi , 50, and her daughter Shabana, 18, were shifted to the THQ hospital.
