I RECENTLY went to a mosque. When done with the purpose of the visit, I saw the money-collection box of the mosque. I was startled to read the note on it which said: “We take the money out on a daily basis. So do not bother to break the lock because you cannot get anything and will only commit a sin.”

This left me thinking how shameless souls have we become that we steal money even from a mosque’s donation box. Who are we trying to deceive? We even do not think of what will happen to us as a consequence of such an act.

Society as a whole should do some soul-searching, while the government and other organisations can also play their role to promote the virtues of honesty, and to remind the masses with both words and deeds the value of ethics and morality in life.

We have been suffering on one count or the other since independence because of constant moral degradation. It is time we woke up and showed repentance.
