KARACHI: Veteran journalist Sohail Sangi on Saturday recalled the sacrifices of his late wife, Kulsum, when he had become a victim of enforced disappearance and later sentenced to seven-year imprisonment during a countrywide crackdown on progressive and liberal forces in 1977.

He said Kulsum had three options — to get divorce and remarry, to go into depression and commit suicide like her friend and sister-in-law or to fight against the despot rule despite all odds.

“She chose the last option, rose up and emerged as social and political activist from an ordinary woman of Thar while upbringing children,” said Mr Sangi while speaking at a programme organised by the Karachi Press Club on the 16th death anniversary of his wife.

Prof Tauseef Ahmed, Dr Jabbar Khattak, Mahesh Kumar, Aslam Khowaja, Riaz Sohail, Fahmida Riaz, Dr. Murtaza Khoro, Shahnila Fayaz, KPC vice president Rasheed Memon also spoke. Khalida Pirzada recited poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz and artist K.B. Abro presented her portraits to Mr Sangi.
